White House officials are working to solve the issues surrounding the shortage of baby formula in the country. According to the latest media news, there are 132 pallets from Nestle Health Science Alfamino Infant and Alfamino Junior Formula that are currently gone out of stock in many parts of the country.
White House officials have hired the services of the Army jets to fly in the first consignment of the baby formula in Indiana before the end of the week.
According to the latest statement issued by the White House on Friday, the Air Force planes are scheduled to fly to Germany, landing at the Ramstein Air Base to collect and deliver 132 pallets of aforementioned baby formula consignments.
Furthermore, there are going to be an additional 114 pallets of Gerber Good Start Extensive HA formula that is to be delivered in the USA in the next week.
The Air Force Planes are planning to fly in around 1.5 million 8-ounces bottles of the hypoallergenic baby formula over two weeks.
To address the issue, President Biden has tasked Pentagon to allow the borrowing of commercial aircraft that will help to fly the cargo of baby formula from Germany to the USA. Meanwhile, the aviation administration of the Pentagon has claimed that for the weekend, there are no free commercial flights available.
Biden has also invoked the Defense Production Act to make the delivery of the baby formula fairly quicker in the region.
On the other hand, Food and Drug Administration head Doctor Robert Cliff who is heading the expedition postulated that the Nutrition Michigan Formula Plant of Abbott Laboratories could start the manufacturing process in the next week.
Baby Formula Production Units Affected due to COVID-19
Talking to the media on the matter of baby formula production, he claimed that it could take somewhere from a few days to weeks before the production and supply in the market reaches normal levels. He also explained that due to the concerns around the COVID pandemic, several manufacturing units had closed production.
Califf also claimed that Abbott is the only company that accounts for 90% of the supply of baby formula for the USA. There are other three big baby formula producers like Perrigo, Reckitt, and Gerber, among others.
FDA also claimed that there is going to be an increase in the product to curb the demand and supply gap. Senate also approved a legislature on Thursday claiming that families dealing with the baby formula famine should be able to enroll in a government assistance program. FDA is also calling for a $28 million relief package to fund the program.
